House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy has come under intense scrutiny over the past days regarding his ability to lead his caucus due to the recent scandals. An analyst claims that McCarthy may be facing a big problem as he has appeared to lose control of his caucus, most especially the infighting occurring.
In a panel discussion on CNN regarding McCarthy’s ability to lead the House Republican caucus, CNN’s congressional correspondent Lauren Fox said that the California Republican is facing a major problem, being unable to stop the internal conflicts within the party. This comes as two Republican Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Nancy Mace are caught in a feud stemming from Colorado Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert’s Islamophobic attacks on Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar.
“He has a huge problem brewing if the Republicans take over the House of Representatives, which right now they look like they have a path to do,” said Fox, when host Manu Raju pressed her on how much control McCarthy has towards the members of his caucus. “He will have a hard time doing basic funding, trying to fund the government, cut any deals with Democrats on things like the debt ceiling.”
“This is a major issue that it is constantly in the news he has members of his conference attacking Democrats with, you know, terrible comments constantly,” Fox continued. “Then he has people like Marjorie Taylor Greene and Nancy Mace having a multiple-day news cycle because they’re fighting with each other publicly. He calls them both to his office and it does not seem to help. Clearly, he does not seem to have control.”
McCarthy drew a lot of backlash when he failed to condemn Boebert for her Islamophobic rhetoric towards Omar, only repeating what the Colorado congresswoman claimed to have done. Omar responded to McCarthy’s comments on the situation, criticizing the House Minority Leader for not calling Boebert out.
“He is a liar and a coward. He doesn’t have the ability to condemn the kind of bigoted Islamophobia and anti-Muslim rhetoric that are being trafficked by a member of his party,” said Omar, who has been subject to threats following the incident with Boebert.
